Instructions for Making a Drawstring Jewelry Pouch thumbnail
Keep your jewels safe in a pouch you made yourself.

Drawstring pouches are an ideal way to store jewelry and keep necklaces from tangling up with each other. Buy colorful fabrics in bold solids or fanciful prints or use recycled bed linens for an ecofriendly drawstring pouch. These little pouches are so easy to make, you'll want to create several in different colors. These colorful little drawstring bags make wonderful gift bags that your recipient will keep rather than throw away.

Instructions

  1. Make a Fabric Jewelry Pouch

    • 1

Cut two pieces of fabric measuring 9 by 16 inches each. For added interest, try experimenting with two different colors or patterns, one fabric for the outside and the other for the lining.

    • 2

Pin the two lengths of fabric on top of each other, right sides facing each other. Sew together along the long sides. Press with iron. Turn right-side out. You should now have a long tube with your good fabric sides facing out.

    • 3

Fold the fabric tube in half lengthwise, with your outside fabric facing inside, and pin together, leaving 1 1/2 inches at the open top. Sew the pinned halves together, leaving that 1 1/2 inches of fabric open and unsewn. You should now have a pouch with 1 1/2 inches of fabric unfinished at the top.

    • 4

Lie the pouch flat and fold over the unfinished flaps to form a channel for the drawstring ribbon to go through. Sew the channels on each side. Do not sew the channels together. You should now have a pouch with a separate channel on each side of the pouch.

    • 5

Thread one ribbon piece through each channel. To ease the threading, pin a safety pin to the end of the ribbon and remove it when the ribbon is threaded through the channel.

    • 6

Turn the pouch right-side out and iron to flatten. Enjoy your pouch!

Tips & Warnings

  • Experiment with different colors and fabric choices for your pouches. Velvet pouches with satin linings make for elegant jewelry pouches, while gingham fabrics with seersucker ribbons make whimsical pouches for the little girl in your life.

  • Try making larger pouches for shoe and purse storage.

  • A large pouch in a brocade fabric can double as an evening bag.
