Instructions

    • 1

Open the word processing program on a computer. In the new document, set the page layout in the File menu to "Landscape." The default page layout is usually "Portrait."

    • 2

Place the cursor in the middle of page with your mouse or by pressing the "Enter" button on the keyboard until the cursor is in the middle of the page. Adjust the paragraph settings so your text aligns in the middle of the document.

    • 3

Type the words you want to pop out in the card in the middle of the document. Use a thicker font, such as "Comic Sans" or "Impact," and enlarge the font so it takes up about a quarter of the page or so. However, your text cannot be more than one line.

    • 4

Add a font effect so the letters are only outlined. To add a text effect to your words, highlight the words you typed and right-click on them with the mouse; the same menu will appear that allows you to copy and paste words. In this menu, click on the word "Font;" this is found on the fourth line of the menu.

In the "Font" screen, find the area that says, "Effects." There are three rows of different effects you can apply to the highlighted font; click on the box next to the word "Outline" in the second row. Then click "OK" at the bottom of the screen.

    • 5

Print the document onto a piece of cardstock.

    • 6

With a pencil, lightly draw a straight line a half-inch above the printed text. The line should be parallel to the printed text. Now draw vertical line from the top of each side of the letter to the horizontal line you just drew.

    • 7

Use a craft knife to cut the sides of the letters, including the sides of the vertical lines you just drew. However, do no cut the top or bottom of the letters or across the vertical lines. Use the craft knife to cut out the holes in letters such as D, A, R, O, P, and so on.

    • 8

Score the middle of the paper where it would fold to make a card. However, do not make a score mark through the letters. Instead, make a score line along the same line you drew above the letters and score the top and bottom of each letter.

    • 9

Fold the paper in half as you would for a greeting card, but do not fold the letters in half. As you fold the piece of paper, push the letters out from the back of the card so the top of the vertical line and the bottom of the letters fold in the same manner as the card, but the tops of the letters (where the vertical lines are connected) fold in the opposite direction.
