Reference, Framework and Sketching
-
1
Find as many reference images of male anime hair that you can. Even try to find reference images of real life hair styles that you can manipulate into anime hair. Study, the images and work out what makes an anime hair style so unique. Find references of the male body as well to help you create the character.

Drawing the boy can be done by breaking the human body into basic shapes and building up the muscles and body mass on top of those shapes. Use shapes such as rectangles, triangles, circles and cylinders for the upper body, head, arms and legs respectively.

Remember that anime characters have a lot of angles. They tend to have pointed elbows and pointed chins. Adding this small details will help to sell your image as an anime style image.
-
4
Remember that male bodies have different proportions than female bodies. The male chest is usually broader than the male waist. The male body is also usually drawn at a height of eight heads. The second head shows the point at which the chest ends, the fourth shows where the crotch should be and the sixth shows where the knees should be.

Note that you should keep the sketch loose and faint and you should avoid erasing too much. Start to sketch in the hair using your reference to make it suitably anime. Anime hair is often spiky and looks like it will defy the laws of physics so have fun with this. Start by drawing large chunks of hair to show the direction and basic style.
-
6
Draw smaller strands within these larger strands of hair to add volume to the style. Don't go overboard, just a few subtle lines here and there will do. Finally, draw single strands at the tips of the chunks of hair for details. Subtlety is the key, but add enough to show form and volume.

7
Draw over the pencil lines you want to keep with your fine liner pen, being careful not to make mistakes as they cannot be erased. Let the pen ink dry for a few moments before erasing the pencil lines to avoid smudging. You should be left with a clean line drawing.

8
Color in your image using your pens or paints. Marker pens work very well for coloring in anime style drawings. When it comes to the hair, you can use any color you like as many anime characters have some very odd hair color. Use your reference for help with lighting and shadow.
