How to Replace the Fan in a Dell E1705 thumbnail
The Dell Inspiron E1705 might have two cooling fans.

The Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop is equipped with either one or two fans for keeping the system cool. All E1705s have a fan to cool the microprocessor. The second fan, which isn't available in all E1705s, is the video-card cooling fan. Both fans are easy to replace, although you must disassemble the computer halfway to reach them. Fortunately, it's not difficult to take apart the computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the computer and disconnect the power cable.

    • 2

Disconnect the cables of all peripheral devices on the computer and remove the battery and any removable media devices.

    • 3

Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the notch on the right end of the hinge cover and pry it up. Remove the hinge cover by lifting it from right to left.

    • 4

Remove the two screws on the top of the keyboard and lift the keyboard to gain access to the flat cable underneath it.

    • 5

Disconnect the flat cable and remove the keyboard from the computer.

    • 6

Turn the computer over and locate the mini-card compartment (the oddly-shaped compartment on the right side of the base). Remove the two screws from the cover and then remove the cover to expose the mini card.

    • 7

Disconnect the cables that are attached to the mini card and turn the computer over.

    • 8

Disconnect the display cable, which runs from the display to the middle section of the computer, right below the display.

    • 9

Remove the two screws on each display hinge (four screws in all) and lift the display off the computer.

    • 10

Extract the six screws labeled with a "P" in the middle of the computer.

    • 11

Turn the computer over and remove the 12 screws from the edges of the base.

    • 12

Turn the computer over again. Locate the touchpad cable and the LED cable in the middle of the computer in a compartment directly above the touchpad buttons, and disconnect them from the motherboard.

    • 13

Lift the palm rest off the computer. Now you should be able to see the fan or fans. If your model has both a microprocessor fan and a video-card fan, they will be on opposite sides of the computer.

    • 14

Locate the microprocessor fan on the left side of the computer and remove the two screws on it. (If your computer has two fans, the microprocessor fan is the larger of the two.)

    • 15

Disconnect the fan cable and remove the fan from the computer.

    • 16

Locate the video-card cooling fan, if there is one, on the right side of the computer and remove it the same way that you removed the microprocessor fan.

    • 17

Install the replacement fans by reversing the order of these steps.

Tips & Warnings

  • Static electricity can damage the internal components of a computer, especially the motherboard. To remove the static from your body, wear a grounding wrist strap or touch an unpainted metal object.
