Directions for a Rag Rug Loom

A rug made on a rag-rug loom adds warmth and comfort to your home, and uses up scraps of leftover fabric you have lying around. You may also be able to recycle all the old clothing that you just can't seem to part with. A rag-rug loom is simple to warp and use.

Instructions

  1. Warping the Rag Rug Loom

    • 1

Set the rug loom up against a wall or table while you thread the warp, and while you are weaving your rag rug.

    • 2

Knot one end of the warp yarn around the first peg beginning with the bottom-left corner of the frame. Bring the warp yarn up and over the first and second pegs on the top-left corner of the frame then down and around the second and third pegs on the bottom of the frame.

    • 3

Continue up to the third peg on top. Repeat this pattern until you reach the last peg. Make a knot around that peg and cut off any excess warp yarn..

    Weaving the Rag Rug

    • 4

Cut fabric or old clothing into long, strips. Try to cut all strips for the rag rug into similar widths. Also try to use similar weights of fabric in one rug.

    • 5

Weave strips of cardboard across the width of the loom so that enough warp is left for you to tie off the finished rag rug after removing it from the loom.

    • 6

Tie the end of the first rag strip to the side of the loom so it doesn't get pulled through the warp strings. Begin weaving the rag strip through the strings in an over-and-under pattern until you reach the opposite side of the frame, then repeat the pattern in the opposite direction.

    • 7

Push the rag strips down with your fingers after each row. This will form a relatively loose weave. Tie additional rag strips to the end of the previous strip as needed until you have completed a rag rug of your desired length.

    • 8

Cut the first and second warp string and tie them in a knot so the rag strips remain in place. Continue with the next two strings, and each two after that until all the strings are tied off on both the top and the bottom of the rag rug.

Tips & Warnings

  • Warp the loom with strong cotton yarn to avoid breakage while you are weaving your rag rug.
