How to Figure the Final Resolution of 300 DPI When Scanning Photos
The key to getting a scan of your image with a 300 DPI output is to use the scanner interface software to preset the scan resolution. If you are using a typical home or office scanner, the scanner software provides you with a range of options in the interface window that will allow you to control the resolution, color and other characteristics of your scan. A 300 DPI scan is good enough to produce excellent photo prints up to 8x10 inches in size.

1
Place the image on the scanner and open your scanner interface software.
-
2
Insert the physical size in inches of the output image you want in the size box. If you want the scanned image to be the same size as the original image, enter the size of the original image. Remember, if you make your output image smaller than your original, you will end up with a digital image that has less information and will be harder to blow up to a larger size.

Select "300 DPI" in the resolution box. This means that an 8x10 inch output image will have a final digital size of 2400x3000 dots (or pixels).

Scan the image and save your file.
