How to Setup a Static IP Address

Your computer's IP (Internet Protocol) address determines how other computers recognize it on the Internet. Sometimes your service provider assigns you a static IP address, meaning you maintain the same IP even after a connection interruption. If you don't have one, you can request it from your provider. Unlike a static IP address from an ISP, however, you have to actually set up your IP if you want a static IP on your local area network (LAN).

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your Start menu and click "Control Panel."

    • 2

Click on "Network Connections" and right-click the connection for which you want to set up a static IP.

    • 3

Click "Properties" and select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" under the "General" tab.

    • 4

Click the "Properties" button below the list of check box items.

    • 5

Click "Use the following IP address" and fill in the static IP address you'd like to have. Leave subnet mask alone and put your router's address as the default gateway.

Tips & Warnings

  • You might have noticed that you also must write a manual DNS server address. You must call your service provider and ask them what default name server addresses they use. They usually have two. If they give you only one, write it twice. You don't really need the alternate, unless the preferred one doesn't respond.
