How to Convert iTunes Movies to Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player (WMP), a standard Microsoft product that comes as the default audio/video player for Windows users, supports both AVI and WMV video. Since your iTunes movies are encoded as MP4s or M4Vs, you must download a program from the Internet to convert them to a WMP-friendly format. (Your computer does not come with software to perform these conversions.) Such programs include Alive Video Converter and AVS Video Converter; they are made specially for Windows users and can convert to and from a number of formats, including MP4 to AVI or WMV. Those who do not wish to download a trial version of these programs may want to try a site like Media-Convert.com, which will upload your iTunes movie directly to its Web server and convert it to the desired format. This site is free; users receive email alerts when their conversions are done processing.

      Download and install a free trial of Alive Video Converter. Agree to the terms of use and run the program.

      Click the "Add" button in the program's main interface to locate and open your video file using the Windows Explorer pop-up screen.

      Click the large "Start" button at the bottom of the program's screen to enter an export options menu.

      Select "Convert to AVI" or "Convert to WMV" from the list of options. (For general conversions, it may be best to stay with the software's default presets; however, you may change them by clicking the menu's drop-down arrow and choosing a different preset.)

      Click "OK" to begin converting your video.

      Direct your Web browser to the AVS Video Converter download page. Download and install the software. Agree to all terms of use and launch the program.

      Hit the input file name "Browse..." button to select the video on your computer's hard drive you want converted. Open your movie in AVS.

      Click the "To AVI" or "To WMV" button at the top of the AVS screen. Your presets will load in the "Profile" field. You may change your video's settings by clicking "Edit Profile," if needed.

      Choose a save location on your computer for your output WMP file by pressing the output file name "Browse..." button. Select the destination on your hard drive where you want the video saved.

      Click "OK" to accept Media-Convert's terms of use and begin the conversion. You will be re-directed to a new window with instructions for downloading and a download link that will become available once the conversion is done.

  • Please allow up to several hours for conversions to complete, depending on the size of your input iTunes movie.
