How to Remove Contact Paper From Walls

Wallpaper-removal products won't work on contact paper.

Removing contact paper from walls can be difficult. Typically, contact paper adhesive is water-resistant, so wallpaper-removal products will not get the job done. Since the adhesive is quite strong, trying to remove the contact paper may damage your walls. If possible, find another alternative to removing the paper such as sanding or priming the walls before painting. However, if removing the contact paper is your only option, equip yourself with a hair dryer and a lot of patience.

Things You'll Need

• Hair dryer
• Citrus-based adhesive remover
• Rag

Instructions

1. Apply heat to one corner of the contact paper, using a hair dryer set to the highest setting. This will help soften the adhesive that binds the contact paper to the walls.

2. Peel the paper slowly in a downward motion. Work in small sections at a time.

3. Reapply heat to the contact paper when you begin to feel resistance while pulling the paper.

4. Apply heat and gently pull the paper until it is removed.

5. Remove any excess adhesive on the walls with a citrus-based adhesive remover, applying it with a rag.
