How to Upgrade an Asus EEE PC Hard Drive

The Asus EeePC is a line of netbook computers designed to provide users with basic computing capabilities and Internet access in as small a package as possible. According to "PC World," the standard EeePC models are able to maintain such low prices because they are built with very basic hardware components including a generally small hard drive. Asus did well to design the EeePC line for easy upgrades, making it a simple task for the user to install a new hard drive with expanded capacity in almost no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut down the Asus EeePC if it is currently running. Leave the computer plugged in to ground the device and prevent static build-up.

    • 2

Flip the Asus EeePC upside down on a flat working surface.

    • 3

Identify the hard drive slot. It is a large square panel roughly in the center of the computer held closed by one or two screws, depending on the specific EeePC model.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the hard drive slot using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Remove the hard drive panel and set aside.

    • 6

Identify the hard drive. A metal bracket holds the hard drive in place with four screws and is located just above the system RAM.

    • 7

Remove the screws from the hard drive bracket using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 8

Remove the hard drive bracket and set aside.

    • 9

Slide the hard drive away from the SATA port until it is disengaged from the system.

    • 10

Lift the hard drive out of the computer.

    • 11

Remove the bottom section of the hard drive bracket from the old hard drive by removing the screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 12

Place the old hard drive in a safe place in case it is needed to restore files or in the event that the new hard drive is defective.

    • 13

Attach the bottom section of the hard drive bracket to the new hard drive.

    • 14

Place the hard drive into the computer with the bottom section of the bracket facing down.

    • 15

Slide the hard drive gently into the SATA port, ensuring that it is firmly connected.

    • 16

Replace the top section of the hard drive bracket and the hard drive panel once the new hard drive is connected.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a hard drive imaging program to copy the contents of your old hard drive to an external device that can then be used to restore the system to your new hard drive.
