How to Make Multimedia Ringtones

How to Make Multimedia Ringtones thumbnail
Add multimedia ringtones to your cell phone.

A ringtone is perhaps the first thing you can add to customize your cell phone. It's common to get bored with in-built ringtones and nobody likes to spend money purchasing ringtones from cell phone carriers. However, you can go a step beyond a simple ringtone. A cost-effective alternative is to create your own multimedia ringtone using a video/audio file of your choice.

Things You'll Need

  • Multimedia file of your choice
  • Cell phone
  • Computer
  • Windows Movie Maker
  • Video converter
  • Cell phone data cable

Instructions

    • 1

Save the multimedia file (video + audio) that you want to use as a ringtone on your desktop.

    • 2

Go to the "Start" menu on your computer and click "All Programs." Go to "Accessories" from the list of programs and select "Windows Movie Maker."

    • 3

Drag the video file from the desktop into the open window of Windows Movie Maker. The goal is to trim this video file to less than 20 seconds, so it can be used as a ringtone.

    • 4

Double-click the small icon of the video you dragged into the window. You will see that the video will start playing inside the Windows Movie Maker.

    • 5

Click the small icon file again and drag it down to the time line in the bottom of the window.

    • 6

Watch the complete multimedia clip and decide which part of the file would you like to use as a ringtone. When you've made up your mind, go to the time line and use the cursor to move left and right. This will crop the video on either side. As you drag the cursor, the video display on the right side of the window will show you the part of the video that is being cropped.

    • 7

Hold the cursor where you want to cease cropping the video. The cropped part will no longer be in the video. If you are satisfied, proceed ahead; otherwise use the undo button "Ctrl + Z" to bring back the complete video in the time line. Again, use the cursor to crop the video from both left and right sides until you are left with a file size of appropriate duration for the ring tone. Ideally, the ring tone should not be longer than 20 seconds.

    • 8

Add any video effects, if desired, by right-clicking the time line and selecting "Video Effects."

    • 9

Click the "Movie Tasks" section, which is on the left-hand side margin on the application. Select "Finish Movie" from the drop-down menu and save the edited multimedia file to your desktop by clicking "Save."

    • 10

Use a video converter to convert the video format (for instance, .avi or .mpeg) into a video format supported by cell phones (such as .3gp). You can find links to some video converters in Resources below.

    • 11

Save the converted file to your desktop. The file extension of the converted video will be .3gp instead of .avi or .mpeg.

    • 12

Connect your cell phone to your computer using the USB cable that came with the phone.

    • 13

Click on the converted file and drag it to the folder of your phone on the computer.

    • 14

Disconnect the phone from the computer. Go to the settings of your phone and set the multimedia file as a ringtone.
