Sew a Santa hat treat bag.

Make Christmas treat bags in the shape of Santa's hat to use as party favors for your child's class Christmas party or as small gift bags for friends and family. This simple cone-shaped bag mimics the shape of St. Nick's red hat and is easily constructed with a small amount of felt. Several treat bags can be constructed in a few hours, leaving you with plenty of time to handle the more time-consuming projects of the holidays.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a 20-inch circle on a sheet of old newspaper, using a compass. Cut out the circle. Fold the circle in half, and then in half again. Crease the folds. Open the circle and you will have four equal pie sections. Cut out two pie sections, using the creases as a guide. One pie section is your cone pattern, which will be Santa's hat.

    • 2

Trace a line 2 inches from the curved edge on the other section. Cut along the new line. Discard the point of the section, leaving you with a 2-inch-wide curved strip. This is the hat brim pattern. The remaining part of the circle will not be used.

    • 3

Pin the cone pattern for Santa's hat on a piece of red felt. Cut out the shape. Pin the hat brim pattern to a small amount of white felt. Cut out the brim.

    • 4

Lay the red felt hat shape on your sewing table. Place the brim on the hat, matching the curved and side edges with those on the hat. Pin the brim to the hat. Top stitch on all four edges of the brim, as close to the brim edge as possible.

    • 5

Fold the hat shape in half, with the brim on the inside and matching the straight edges of the hat. Pin the straight edges together. Sew the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. This forms the cone. Turn the cone right side out.

    • 6

Cut a 10-inch length of 1/4-inch wide white ribbon. Lay the cone on your work surface with the seam centered down the middle and facing up. Press the cone flat with your hand, creating folds on each straight edge. Insert one end of the ribbon 1/2 inch inside the cone, at one folded edge. Pin the end to hold. Repeat with the other end of the ribbon inside the other folded edge. This creates your treat bag handle. Sew the handle ends to the cone.

    • 7

Apply a dab of hot glue to the point of the Christmas treat bag. Place a 1/2-inch white pompom over the glue and hold until the glue has cooled.
