Instructions for a Ruffle Foot on a Sewing Machine
You can sew ruffles into fabric by hand or with a regular sewing machine foot, but this can be a painstaking process compared to the ease of using a ruffler attachment. A ruffler attachment uses a mechanical feed that automatically gathers the fabric into small pleats and directs them under the foot, where it is sewn down. A ruffler can be used to sew individual ruffles or to make a ruffle and attach it to a second piece of fabric in one step.

Unscrew the presser foot shaft on your sewing machine.

Thread your sewing machine.

Attach the ruffler foot to the shank with the ruffle regulator (movable arm) facing toward you. The procedure may vary based on the manufacturer of your attachment and machine, so consult your manual for specific instructions.

Place the right side of your ruffle fabric against the right side of your garment fabric, if you are making and attaching the ruffle in one step.

Select the number of stitches between each pleat on the ruffle regulator (usually three, six or 12).

Adjust the pleat depth by turning the screw on the front of the attachment. Turn it right for deeper pleats or left for shallower pleats.

Place the fabric under the ruffler foot and lower the foot. If your attachment has this feature, line your fabric up using the fabric guides on the foot.

Depress the sewing machine pedal as you carefully guide the fabric. Go slowly. As you sew, the ruffle regulator will move up and down, gathering the top fabric in small pleats and tucking them under the stationary portion of the foot and sewing the ruffle down.
