How to Learn English Vocabulary & Grammar

The English vocabulary contains thousands of words.

English vocabulary refers to the words that comprise the English language, and English grammar refers to the rules that enable the vocabulary words to be used coherently and correctly. English vocabulary and grammar can be taught through traditional methods, as well as through ordinary occurrences. To learn English vocabulary and grammar, you should study different grammar and vocabulary books, read regular books, and pay attention to the English signs and instructions on common products.

1. Study the rules of English grammar and the different English vocabulary words with a grammar and vocabulary book. English grammar and vocabulary books can be found online or in bookstores. Such books explain the general principles of how to formulate sentences, subject-verb agreement and useful words that are found often within the English language. By continually reviewing the rules within the grammar and vocabulary books, you will obtain a basic understanding of the English grammar and vocabulary. This will help you apply these rules to ordinary situations.

2. To learn English vocabulary and grammar, take a few grammatical rules and vocabulary words each day, and spend time memorizing them. For example, on one day you may choose to focus on nouns, and on another day you may choose to focus on verbs.

3. Read different books. To learn English vocabulary and grammar, you should read books that are written in English. Both short stories and novels provide good examples of proper grammar and a large selection of vocabulary words. Observing the proper sentence structure within the books will allow you to become more familiar with the English grammar rules. Also, while reading, keep a vocabulary list. When you find a word that you do not know, write it down and look it up in the dictionary. Record the definition of the word. As you read more of the book, you will find other words that you do not know, and your vocabulary list will become longer. By studying your vocabulary list, you will learn more words.

5. Make corrections within your writing and the writing of others. To learn English vocabulary and grammar, test your understanding with others. For example, when you write a composition, a sign, or a poster, allow a friend to make grammatical corrections on your work. Also, you should make corrections on the compositions, posters and signs that they make. Group interaction will help you to obtain a better understanding of grammatical words and vocabulary words that you may not have known.

6. Create grammatical exercises that incorporate new vocabulary words. For example, you may choose to make an exercise that involves subject-verb agreement. Within your exercise, you may write 10 sentences in which the proper form of the verb needs to be filled in. Have a friend fill in the verbs, and then correct his work. This will provide a learning experience for both of you.
