How to Paint Cast Iron Radiators thumbnail
Repaint your cast iron radiators and improve the look of your home.

Many older homes have cast iron radiators throughout that heat the home during the winter months. Over time, with the constant heating and cooling of the radiators, the paint chips off and makes the radiators look unattractive. You can repaint cast iron radiators and restore them to their original look. It will take some time and several steps, but the end product is well worth the effort you put into it. Work on several radiators at once to help you save time. This is a project best done outside, because it can be somewhat messy.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan on working early in the spring as you turn off your heat to allow the paint to cure on the radiators for at least three months before you turn your heat back on again.

    • 2

Remove the radiators by turning off the gas and loosening the bolts. Place a bowl underneath the valves in case any water comes out. Take the radiator outside and tilt on its side to remove any remaining water.

    • 3

Wipe down your radiator really well with a rag and warm water.

    • 4

Scrape off any flaking spots with sandpaper or a stiff wire brush. Sandblast all the parts of the radiator to remove any stubborn paint or rust. Wear safety glasses when sandblasting to protect your eyes.

    • 5

Wipe off the radiator after sanding to remove any debris that might mess up the paint job.

    • 6

Hold the spray paint can 12 to 18 inches away from the radiator. Work on a section of the radiator at a time, and completely but lightly cover with paint. Spray on the paint in a fairly thin layer. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 7

Apply at least one more coat of paint for thorough and even coverage.

    • 8

Allow the paint to dry thoroughly according to manufacturer's instructions before moving the radiator back into the house.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get a couple of friends to help you move the cast iron radiators, because they are extremely heavy.

  • If you are having trouble finding heat resistant spray paint, look in hardware stores or fireplace shops that sell wood burning equipment.

  • Buy at least two or three cans of the spray paint to make sure you have enough for good coverage. Store any leftover cans in a cool dry place and save for when you need to make a touch up.
