How to Determine the Sex of a Sugar Glider

Sugar gliders stated becoming popular household pets in the early 1990s. Never growing more than 7 inches long, these 4-oz. marsupials, which hail from Indonesia, New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia, are the original pocket pet. It's important to know what sex your sugar glider is, as you might end up with more gliders than you started with if you have one of each in your home.

Instructions

    • 1

Gently turn your glider over on its back.

    • 2

Look for a pouch on the surface of your glider's abdomen. You might have to stretch the skin slightly to find the opening, as it resembles a vertical slit where the belly button would be. If this is present, you have a female sugar glider.

    • 3

Look for bald spots on the glider's forehead, as well as a scrotum in the form of a tiny, furry wart in the same location as a belly button. If both of these are present, you have a male sugar glider.
