How to Change Checking Account Information
Checking accounts are frequently accessed bank accounts. Most banks now provide debit cards, in addition to checks, that can be used to draw against a checking account. Most banks also are serious about consumer protection and privacy. In order to change any information about your checking account, you will first need to confirm your identity. In some cases, written confirmation may be required.

1
Set up online banking if you have not already done so. Many changes on a checking account can be performed easily online (at any time of day). You will need your account number, Social Security number, address and phone number to establish online banking. You will likely receive an email confirmation when this process is complete.
-
2
Logon to your online bank account. Choose the account with which you would like to work. Click on the link that relates to account changes or updates. You will be presented with a slew of options. These could be: address changes, phone number changes, offers to enroll in paperless billing, account transfers and many others. Look for the change you need from this list.

3
Contact your bank by phone during business hours if the change you need is not listed online. Speak with a customer service representative or an account servicing representative. Account servicing representatives will be able to handle more complex requests--like changing an account number.
-
4
Ask what documentation might be required. Consent documents might be required to halt or enroll in automatic payments. Automatic payments, sometimes called ACH payments, are automatic, direct debits from your account and normally need a signed authorization form.

5
Speak with an account supervisor if the representative cannot handle your request. If you have an identity theft issue, you may also need to contact the Federal Trade Commission, too. You can file online complaints at the FTC (see Resources).
