A larger resolution gives you more space to work with.

As technology increases, computers get smaller, faster and more efficient. However, screen sizes continue to be available in larger and larger resolutions. A larger resolution means that there is more space on the screen for programs, icons and other content. Certain resolutions can be beneficial to different users depending on what they need. Those with trouble seeing may want a lower resolution where everything appears larger, where multi-taskers may want more room on their screens for work and play. Changing your screen's resolution on a Mac is a quick and simple process, and the changes are instant.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your System Preferences by clicking on the Apple icon on the upper left corner of your screen and clicking "System Preferences."

    • 2

Click "Displays" under the "Hardware" heading, and make sure you currently have the "Display" tab selected. A white box labeled "Resolutions" is displayed, listing the resolutions your monitor is capable of, starting at the smallest (less room on the screen and bigger icons) to largest (more room, smaller icons).

    • 3

Select the resolution of your choice. The changes will take effect instantly, letting you see what your resolution will look like from that point on. Once you are satisfied with the way your screen looks, you can close System Preferences; there is no "save" or "apply" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change the brightness and color settings from the "Displays" settings page. You can also calibrate your monitor to make sure your colors and other data is displaying correctly.
