How to Process Labels Compatible With a Dymo Labelwriter
A DYMO LabelWriter is a label and postage printer available for use with a PC and MAC that features software for writing and formatting labels to a person's specific needs. Processing "compatible" non-DYMO labels doesn't require any special procedures. As compatible labels are simply generic versions of brand labels (equivalent roll and label size/shape), you can process the labels in the same way as those ordered direct from DYMO: load the software (if necessary), insert the new DYMO-compatible labels into the printer, prep a label template and start printing.
Instructions
-
-
1
Plug your DYMO LabelWriter printer into an electrical socket.
-
2
Load the LabelWriter software for your specific model of DYMO LabelWriter on your computer. Insert the LabelWriter CD into your computer's CD-ROM and follow the onscreen installation prompts. When prompted by the software, connect your LabelWriter printer to the computer via the USB cable. If you've already installed the software and used the printer to print on DYMO labels, skip this step.

3
Remove any unused labels or an empty label cardboard core from your LabelWriter printer. Open the lid on your printer and pull out the label spool. Grasp both sides of the spool, pull it apart and then slide the unused labels or empty core from the spool spindle.
-
4
Place your roll of LabelWriter-compatible labels on the printer's spool spindle. Grasp the spindle side of the spool in your left hand. Pick up your roll of compatible labels. Slide the roll onto the spindle so that the end of the labels hangs to feed under rather than over the top of the roll and then push the roll securely against the left side of the spool so that the notches on the side push into the cardboard core to hold the roll in place.
-
5
Prep the labels in the printer. Slide the right side of the spool onto the spindle until it also sits securely against the roll---if done correctly, the roll should rest on the left side of the spool with the end of the labels hanging from underneath. When finished, insert the assembled spool into the printer. Grasp the end of the labels and insert it into the label feed slot at the front. If done correctly, the labels should automatically feed into the printer. If the labels don't feed automatically, press the "Form Feed" button.
-
6
Close the printer's cover and process the labels as you would DYMO labels. If you've never processed labels using your DYMO LabelWriter printer, refer to you specific model's Quick Start Guide. Typically, you'll type and format your label text on a template in the LabelWriter software and then click the printer icon button to begin printing.

Tips & Warnings
If your roll of labels comes with perforations on one side, slide the perforated side of the roll onto the spindle first.

On the back of the Dymo brand labels are a series of black rectangles. What are these used for? I assume that to use generic thermal labels I just need to set the label size and it should work?
