How to Install Photovoltaic Solar Cells
Photovoltaic solar cells are typically installed on building rooftops. For ensuring optimum effectiveness of the cells, it is important that you install them where they receive direct sunlight all day long. Additionally, you have to be careful while picking the right spot to avoid such obstructions as a building or trees that can hinder sunlight from reaching the cells. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Solar panel mounts
- Photovoltaic solar cells
- Stud finder
- Twine/laser sight
- Electric drill
- Stainless steel lag bolts
- Roofing nails
- Chalk
Instructions

1
Purchase all the necessary equipment for installing the panels. Besides the solar panels, you also need to buy mounting brackets and rails. These supplies usually come along with the panels but if you don't have them, you can purchase them separately.
-
2
Determine which location on your rooftop will be the best for mounting the panels. Make sure the chosen spot receives abundant sunlight.
-
-
3
Draw straight lines on your roof to mark out the area for the mounts. You can use a chalk for this purpose.
-
4
Find rafters installed on that particular area of your roof. Use a stud finder for locating the rafters.
-
5
Align mounting brackets on top of the rafters you located.
-
6
Pre-drill mounting holes in the center of each rafter using a pilot drill bit. This will avoid splitting of the rafters. Drill and secure the brackets to the rafters using stainless steel lag bolts. Once the brackets are secure in place, place metal flashing over the brackets to prevent roof leaks.
-
7
Fasten metal rails alongside the mounting brackets. Install the panels alongside the metal rails using stainless steel bolts.
-
8
Open the junction boxes that are located on the back of each solar panel. Wire the panels together until you reach the final one.
-
9
Connect the wires from the final panel to a separate junction box. Now run a conduit from the panels to the inverter inside the house. Once you are done, close the junction boxes.
