How to Make Durable Luggage Tags
Luggage tags are useful for identifying your luggage when you travel and are essential for airlines to match lost luggage with its rightful owner, but they can serve many other purposes as well. Kids' school backpacks, computer pouches, gym bags and beach bags are just a few of the items that you can identify with a luggage tag. Tags on luggage range from the flimsy paper tags with elastic string that airlines provide to engraved brass tags with leather straps, but you can easily make sturdy, inexpensive tags at home.

- Computer
- White paper
- Colored marker
- Scissors
- Luggage tag self-laminating sheets with slots, 2 1/2 by 4 1/4 inches
- Luggage tag plastic loops

Type the following information with a word-processing program, choosing a font size of 12 to 20 points for legibility: your name, complete mailing address and telephone number.

Personalize the tag by inserting an image next to the identifying information. A photo of you, your family or a favorite vacation destination may be used. If you are making the tag for a bag with a special purpose, such as tennis or golf, select an appropriate image, such as a tennis racquet or golf club.

Print the tag onto white paper. Further personalize the tag by drawing a colorful border or other design around the edges with a brightly colored marker.

Cut the paper a little smaller than the laminating sheets. A measurement of 2 by 3 1/2 inches will leave an adequate border for the laminating sheets.

Open the self-laminating sheets, place the tag inside and press the laminating sheets together. Smooth any air bubbles out to ensure the sheets adhere to one another securely.

Slip the plastic loop through the slot in the tag, and affix to your bag.

Self-laminating sheets can be purchased at office supply stores.
Kids can make their own luggage tags using markers and stickers instead of a computer.
A business card may be used with the self-laminating sheets.
Place an extra luggage tag inside your luggage in case the outer tag becomes separated.
