For your nursery theme, one of the first things you will probably choose is baby bedding. However, sometimes you may find that you cannot find a bedding set that matches your personal sense of style or that those you do like are very expensive. You could make your own bedding, but the idea of making a fitted crib sheet can be intimidating for the non-expert sewer. Luckily, you can make your own fitted crib sheet at home for little money and little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Prewash and dry all your fabric before you begin cutting and sewing. This is especially important if you are using cotton or cotton blend since it will likely shrink when you wash it, making the finished product harder to use. You can use any type of fabric, either new or even fabric from two old sheets.

    • 2

Cut your fabric into two pieces that measure 34 by 60 inches, after washing. The short edges of fabric will be the head and foot of the sheet, while the long edges will be the sides.

    • 3

Place the two pieces of cut fabric together on your work surface with the right sides together and the wrong sides facing out and pin them together along the two side edges and the head edge using straight pins. On the side pieces, leave the last inch by the foot of the fabric unsewn. Use your sewing machine to attach the two sheets together. Remove the pins.

    • 4

Fold the foot side of the fabric over to create a 1/2 inch hem. Pin it in place and use your sewing machine to hem it. Do this on both pieces of fabric.

    • 5

Cut a length of Velcro that is the length of your foot side of fabric. Pin the male side to one side of the foot fabric and the female side to the other side of the foot fabric. Sew the Velcro in place and remove the pins.

    • 6

Turn the finished sheet right side out and insert the mattress into the sheet. Seal the Velcro to hold it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most crib mattress measure 27-3/8 by 51-1/4 by 5-7/8 inches. Before you cut your fabric, measure your crib mattress to ensure that the measurements are the same. If not, adjust your fabric measurements as needed.
