Waxing a skimboard is a must for anyone that truly wants to enjoy the sport. Applying wax to the top of your board provides a sticky surface that makes it easier to stay on top of the board. The trick to waxing your skimboard properly is getting the old wax off before applying the new layer of wax.

Things You'll Need

  • Skimboard
  • Wax
  • Hair dryer

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape the surface of the skimboard with a plastic putty knife. Lay the skimboard in the sun, or use a hair dryer to melt any remaining wax. It's essential to start with a fresh surface for each layer of wax.

    • 2

Rub your board with a towel or some sand to remove any grease that may be stuck to the surface. Grease keeps wax from properly adhering to the board.

    • 3

Select a wax that matches the water temperature in which you'll be skimboarding. Cold water wax is designed for water that is between 52 and 62 degrees. Since cold water waxes wear off quicker than warm water waxes, it's usually better to use warmer wax in temperatures between 63 and 68 degrees. It's best to use warm water wax in water that is between 68 and 76 degrees and tropical wax in water that is over 77 degrees.

    • 4

Cover the entire deck (top of the board) of your skimboard with a quick base coat. This doesn't have to be perfect, you just want to get a coat on your board before you polish it with a top coat.

    • 5

Rub the wax on in a circular motion over the entire deck. Be careful to cover the entire board, or you'll have slippery spots when standing on it.

Tips & Warnings

  • The hotter it is outside, the faster your wax will melt off your board. Always bring additional wax, and store it in a shady area. Only apply wax in the shade, so that it doesn't melt.
