Coaching youth sports can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. The majority of coaches come from the parent volunteer ranks. Are you ready for the commitment?

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider the commitment. It takes a lot of time and energy to coach properly. Make sure you have both before signing on.

  2. Step 2

Run it by your child. See how he or she feels about you coaching and whether there are any objections.

  3. Step 3

Hit the books. Read up on the sport, and consider taking a coaching course.

  4. Step 4

Come up through the ranks. Volunteer to be an assistance coach at first to learn the ropes.

  5. Step 5

Become a student of the game. Watch teams and athletes of similar age to that of your child. Also, watch older teams or individuals so that you know what to expect as you move along.

  6. Step 6

Ask around. Find other coaches with good reputations and get to know them. Ask for their advice.

  7. Step 7

Observe other coaches. Attend games, especially those coached by someone with a good reputation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be prepared. Consider whether you have the ability to stay at least one step ahead of those you are coaching - both in knowledge and preparation.
  • Learn the language. Understand the sport you are coaching, including its vocabulary.
  • Use an expert. You don't have to do the sport to be a coach. But do find a skilled person to use for demonstrations.
  • Study the rules. You should be prepared by knowing at least the local rules of the activity you are coaching. Knowing the national or international rules would be a bonus.
  • Get support if you're a woman. Female coaches are rarer than male coaches - and greatly appreciated. But chances are they'll need extra support and encouragement.
