You can plug your computer directly into the DSL modem, or connect a router to allow multiple computers to access the internet.

Setting up a DSL connection in Windows XP is simple and will provide you with increased Internet speeds if you are switching from dial-up. This can be done whether you have a wired or wireless router, or if you are simply plugging straight in from the modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the modem and your computer.

    • 2

Connect the computer to the DSL modem by plugging one end of the Ethernet cable into the back of the DSL modem and the other into the Ethernet port on the computer. If you have a router, the router will connect directly to the DSL modem instead of the computer. You can then connect the router directly to the computer using an additional Ethernet cable.

    • 3

Turn on the modem and your computer.

    • 4

Test the Internet connection after both devices finish booting by opening Internet Explorer and navigating to a common website, such as ehow.com. If the website loads correctly then your computer is now connected to the Internet. If it fails to load, open the Start Menu, click Control Panel and then Network Connection. Right-click on the network connection and click "Enable."
