An advanced goalkeeper dazzles onlookers with a variety of leaps, dives and artful distribution techniques. In fact, it is often advanced players who inspire younger children to try this position.

Things You'll Need:

  • Soccer Balls
  • Soccer balls
  • Video Cameras
  1. Step 1

Expect physical fitness. People are often under the impression that a goalkeeper's position is sedentary. But to perform at this level, a keeper needs a high degree of physical fitness.

  2. Step 2

Look for split-second reaction time. At this level, there are no second chances.

  3. Step 3

Notice the use of both sides of the body. Unlike at previous levels, in which keepers tend to use the dominant side of the body, an advanced keeper moves adeptly off either leg and to either side, and punches or tips the ball with either hand.

  4. Step 4

Look for skillful tactics. An advanced keeper is skilled at anticipating the angle of a shot, and uses psychology (an intimidating stance or movement that could cause an opponent to panic).

Tips & Warnings
  • Be extra supportive. High-level goalkeeping is a high-pressure position.
  • Videotape your keeper. This is a useful instructional tool.
  • Watch top keepers. Whether on television or by attending pro games, it is inspiring and instructive to watch others perform.
  • Go the extra mile. Help your keeper find special conditioning and high-level training.
  • Stay relaxed. You must accept the physical risks that a keeper faces.
  • Accept the cost. In addition to equipment, high-level goalkeepers often attend special camps and clinics.

on 8/8/2006 When a player is coming on a break away, run to him leaning toward the ball. If it's possible, dive and grab the ball regardless of the consequence of the player.

on 7/6/2006 Communication and organizing the defense is just as large a part of successful goalkeeping as being able to save shots and intercept crosses. Be commanding and direct - the defenders should know exactly what you want them to do. Most of all, be loud! Not only will your own team hear you better, but frequently a loud, commanding presence between the sticks will intimidate opposing forwards and make them think that they are facing somebody who really knows what they're doing in there. This, in turn, will lead to them being more selective about the shots they take, and make them think they need a perfect shot to score. This advantage is huge in a close game.

on 11/22/2005 Have a player on the front and back post all the time. Shout at your team if you have to, it's very important.
Also, if one of the opponents attackers stands in front of you, and tries to block you, don't let him get in your way! Move around the 6 yard box and play around with him. Get in a good position when the corner is taken.

on 11/22/2005 You have to stay calm and right before the player is going to shoot, you have to step up and cut down the angle.
