How to Skin a Rabbit for Fur

How to Skin a Rabbit for Fur thumbnail
Some rabbits have exotic furs.

While freshly caught and killed rabbits are a good source of meat, it can also be a nice way to collect the valuable fur. This can be a fairly messy process, but if you follow the proper procedure, you'll end up with a durable, long-lasting piece of rabbit fur.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Kill the rabbit quickly by dislocating its neck. Hold the rabbit tightly at the rear legs and head and pull back on the head sharply. This kills the rabbit instantly and painlessly. You can also strike the rabbit on the head between its ears with a blunt stick.

    • 2

Hang the rabbit from its back legs from the overhead pole. The twine should be tied just above the hock joints, which connect the rabbit's legs to its torso.

    • 3

Remove the rabbit's head and allow the body to completely bleed out. Cut off all four forepaws and tail as well.

    • 4

Cut through the skin around the rabbit's hock joints and then cut across the lower part of the body. Pull the skin down over the rabbit's body and remove it completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Skinning a rabbit can be very messy so this should be done outdoors.
