How to Convert a BMP to an Icon File
Making custom icons from existing bitmap images is a creative way to personalize your computer desktop. Use these custom icons to replace the existing icons in frequently used software shortcuts or to make quick links to your favorite websites. Bitmap images are native to several popular operating systems. This greatly simplifies converting the bitmap image (.bmp file) into an icon (.ico file).

How to Convert a BMP to an Icon File
-
1
Move or save the bitmap image file you want to convert to your desktop. Working on the desktop will make the process simpler and allow you to see the results immediately.
-
2
Look at the file on the desktop. If you see both the file name and .bmp extension displayed below the generic bitmap icon, you can proceed to the next step. If not, you will need to modify the "Hide extensions for known file types" setting for your system. From the "Start" menu, double-click "Control Panel," then "Folder Options." Select the "View" tab. Uncheck the check box next to "Hide extensions for known file types" in the "Advanced Settings" scroll box. Click "Apply," then return to the desktop. Your file should display both the file name and the .bmp extension.

3
Right click on the image and select "Rename" from the pop-up menu.
-
4
Replace the existing file .bmp extension with .ico, then press "Enter." You will receive a warning that changing the file name extension may make the file unusable. Ignore this and click "Yes."
-
5
Notice the generic bitmap icon is now an icon displaying the image you chose.
-
6
Create a folder to store your custom icons. A subfolder named "My Icons" in your "My Documents" directory works very well. Move your new icon to your chosen directory.

Tips & Warnings
For better results, use square bitmaps. Images that measure 16 by 16, 24 by 24, or 48 by 48 pixels make the best icons. If the image you are using is irregular in shape or extremely large, use image editing software to adjust the image size or select a portion of the image that is square.
Images that are very large or irregular in shape can be difficult or even impossible to view correctly after conversion into icons.
