Ken Blackburn holds the record for flight time of a paper airplane.

Paper airplanes, even in their simplest form, take a few minutes to construct and can provide hours of entertainment for an enthusiast. The best paper airplanes will glide through the air for several seconds before coming down. The current Guinness Book of World Records flying time is 27.6 seconds. This record was set by Ken Blackburn in the Atlanta Superdome on Oct. 8, 1998.

Things You'll Need

  • 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the sheet of paper in half creasing it down the middle and then open it back up. Grab the top left hand corner of the paper and fold it down until it touches the crease in the center creating a flap. Grab the top right corner of the paper and fold it down until it touches the crease in the center creating a flap. The paper should now have a point at the top with both flaps snugly folded down. The two flaps should meet in the center of the paper.

    • 2

Fold the paper again on each side creating two additional flaps. Grab the paper on the left side at the point where the angle created by the first flap is. Fold over so that the angle is on the center crease. Do the same thing on the right side.

    • 3

Fold the sheet of paper tightly in half along the original center crease line. You will have a point at the top and a straight line down the side that meets the bottom of the paper at a 90-degree angle. The other side should be angled back up toward the point.

    • 4

Hold the point of the paper tightly. Create one of the wings by folding down one of the flaps along the straight line side of the paper. Fold the flap along the straight line for the length of the paper. Repeat the same procedure with the other flap, on the opposite side, to create the second wing. The paper airplane is now ready for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add a paperclip to the bottom of the paper airplane to increase flying time.

  • Do not overlap the folds as this may cause undesirable results.
