How to Qualify for Illinois Food Stamps

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food and nutrition services to low income individuals and families residing in Illinois. SNAP, previously known as the Food Stamp program, provides eligible households with an electronic debit card to use at grocery stores in Illinois. Most households with monthly gross incomes over $2,000 (or $3,000 for seniors) are not eligible for assistance. The maximum assistant amount ranges from $200 to $1502 a month, depending on household size and monthly income.

Things You'll Need

• Snap application
• Identification (driver's license or state-issued identification card)
• Proof of residency
• Paycheck stubs
• Social security cards for individuals listed on the application

Instructions

1. Verify that you meet the income requirements to qualify by using the SNAP Eligibility Calculator (see Resources below) to estimate your eligible benefits.

2. Fill out and submit an online SNAP application. You can also mail your application to the Illinois Department of Human services using the office locator search to find an office near you.

3. Wait for your interview. Bring your drivers license (or state id), social security card, paycheck stubs and proof of residence to your meeting with the DHS caseworker.

4. Use your Link debit card to only purchase food items once you are approved. Alcohol, tobacco and non-food items (except seeds and plants for food gardens) are prohibited.
