Crochet warm hat and scarf sets.

Parents in northern climates know there are never too many hats and scarves when winter rolls around. After half an hour of neighborhood snowball fights, many children are ready to come inside and change out for dry outerwear. Novice crocheters can create a stockpile of these warm, winter staples in just a few afternoons. Use the simplest crochet stitches, like chain, single crochet and double crochet, and create custom sets for each child.

Instructions

  1. Hat

    • 1

Make a loop in the end of the yarn and chain stitch until the chain reaches from the bottom of the child's nose to the top of her head.

    • 2

Turn and make a single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Single crochet in every chain after this until you reach the end of the row.

    • 3

Chain one and turn. Skip the first stitch and single crochet in every stitch after that until the end of the row is reached. Chain one and turn again. Continue adding rows of single crochet until the piece can be wrapped around the child's head with the chain row touching the last row crocheted. Tie a knot and fasten off the yarn.

    • 4

Thread the tapestry needle with a length of yarn. Place the bottom of the chain row and the top of the last row created on top of each other. Sew the two rows together to create a tube.

    • 5

Sew a loose, running stitch through the stitches at one end of the tube. Pull the stitches tightly to gather the tube together at the top of the hat. Knot the yarn securely and cut off the excess.

    • 6

Turn the hat right side out. Fold up the bottom 2 inches to create a cuff.

    Scarf

    • 7

Make a loop in the end of the yarn and chain stitch until the chain is the length chosen for the finished scarf. A classic scarf length is 45 inches; adjust for a smaller child.

    • 8

Double crochet in the third chain from the hook, and in every chain after that until the end of the row is reached. Chain two and then turn.

    • 9

Skip the first stitch in the row and then double crochet in every stitch after that until the end of the row is reached. Chain two and turn. Continue adding rows of double crochet in this manner until the scarf measures 6 inches wide. Fasten the yarn with a knot and clip it loose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change scarf and hat looks by alternating colors every two rows to create stripes.

  • This pattern works for any size person, from a small child to an adult.

  • Read the label on the yarn skein to make sure it is washable.
