How to Share One Output for Two Subwoofers

How to Share One Output for Two Subwoofers thumbnail
Connect two subwoofers to one receiver with a Y adapter.

Subwoofers produce deep, rumbling bass for a home theater system. These powered, low-frequency effects speakers add depth to movies and music when connected to an audio-video receiver. Using more than one subwoofer might be desirable in large rooms or for those who simply enjoy room-rattling bass, but many AV receivers are equipped with only a single output jack. Getting around this limitation requires an audio Y adapter to split the output signal from the receiver to a pair of subwoofers.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 subwoofer cables
  • Y adapter with three quarter-inch RCA-type jacks.

    • 2

Plug the other end of each cable into the input jack on the back of a subwoofer.

    • 3

Insert the plug on a third subwoofer cable into the remaining jack on the Y adapter, and connect the other end to the subwoofer output jack on the back of the AV receiver.

    • 4

Plug in the power cords, push the "power" button on each subwoofer and adjust the volume control knob on the back panel of the subwoofers to the desired level.

Tips & Warnings

  • Connect both subwoofers to the AV receiver before plugging the components into the electricity.
