Everything done online is tied to an IP (Internet Protocol) address. The IP address identifies the computer from which Internet data requests are made. An IP address can be used to find out in which region or country a person is located. IP addresses are also tied to email addresses. There is a quick way to identify the IP address tied to a sent email.

      Locate the IP address in Gmail. Go to the Gmail website and log into your account. Click on the email for which you want to find the IP address. Click the drop-down arrow next to "Reply," and click on "Show Original." Look for the line that starts with "Received: from." The IP address is the number inside the brackets.

      Locate the IP address inside of Microsoft Outlook. Open Outlook and click on the "Mail" tab if it isn't already selected. Double-click the email that you want to identify the IP address of. Click "View > Options" menu items at the top of the message window. The "Options" dialog box appears. Scroll down to the bottom of window, and see the text inside of the "Internet Headers" section. Locate the line that starts with "Received: from" and look for the IP address inside of the brackets.

      Locate the IP address in Yahoo! Mail. Go to your Yahoo! mailbox. Click on the email message for which you want to locate the IP address to open it. Right-click on the subject line and click on "View Full Headers" from the menu that pops up. Look through the text until you find the line that starts with "Received: from." The IP address is in the brackets on the same line.

      Find the IP address in Hotmail. Go to your Hotmail or Windows Live email account. Click on "Inbox" on the left menu to go to the inbox. Right-click on the email message for which you want to find the IP address, and click on "View message source." The email headers open in another window. Look for the line that starts with "Received: from." Locate the IP address on the same line in the brackets.

      Find the IP address in AOL mail. Log into your AOL account. Double-click on the email you want to open it. Click on the arrow next to "Action" and click on "View Message Source." The headers open in a new window. The IP address is listed on the line that begins with "X-AOL-IP."
