How to Make a Publicity Flyer
Plan ahead before you get started on your publicity flyer. Choose a main theme for the flyer and think about how this flyer can stand out and communicate your message. Identify your audience and ask yourself why they would pick up your flyer. You also need to know how much you want to spend. Advantages of making your own flyers include the low cost, the simplicity of making copies and the ability to make them on standard sized printer paper. Before starting, look at other flyers for ideas and inspiration.

Create your flyer using plain white computer paper first. If you plan to copy it onto colored paper, you can use the image on the white paper as your master copy.

Lay out your flyer in a "Z" pattern, a standard layout. People read flyers from the upper left corner and end up in the lower right corner. Place important action information in this lower right corner, such as asking the reader to register, attend an event or call for information.

Make the letters on your flyer large enough to see from a distance but not too large. Keep the flyer layout simple, using just two different letter fonts or typefaces on the page. For example, use serif in the body of the flyer and sans serif for the headers, both popular font styles. If you choose a fancy font, use it only for the headers.

Create bullets if you have a list on your flyer. This keeps the layout nice and neat on the page.

Use borders and boxes to organize your flyer. Borders add decoration to the flyer and attract attention. If you have separate information to add, put it in a box. Examples include a coupon offer or the dates and time of an event.

Ask another person to proofread your flyer before you make copies. Have that person check to see if your flyer makes sense and if it contains grammar errors.

Never use all caps in your flyer--people find them difficult to read. Only use caps sparingly, when you need to emphasize something.
