How to Take AR Tests at Home

Accelerated Reader, better known as AR, is a trademarked program in which students are awarded points for reading a book and scoring well on a quiz about that book. Most schools require that you take your AR tests in the classroom, because the school has to buy the quizzes and ensure that students don't look at the book to answer a question. However, you can take quizzes at home if you buy them yourself. These quizzes serve as practice, helping you perform better when you take the official test at school.

Visit your school's library Web page. Search for a link related to “Accelerated Reader” or “AR.” Most libraries do not offer online AR quizzes. But if yours does, click the link and follow the on-screen directions.

Visit the homepage of Renaissance Learning, the creator of AR quizzes, and click “Store” from the menu bar. Select “Log-In” from the top right of the screen. Log in to an account or create a new one, then return to the store. Select “Quiz Search” from the blue box.

Type the title of the book you want to take a quiz for in the search bar and press “Go.” Check-mark the boxes that correspond with “RP,” “LS” and “VP” next to the correct title. This means you want your quiz to include reading practice, literacy skills and vocabulary practice. Press “Add Selected Titles to Cart.”

Search for more titles, or purchase the titles you selected by entering your billing information. After checkout you can take your practice quizzes anytime you like by logging into your account.
