How to Size Downhill Skis

Size your downhill skis for maximum control.

Choosing the proper size for your downhill skis is a matter of safety as well as comfort. Long skis will give you stability but are more difficult to control than short skis. Ability level and height are the two most important factors to consider when sizing new downhill skis. If you are shopping for a child, you may want to buy skis that are slightly longer to allow for growth.

Instructions

Evaluate your ability level on the slopes. If you are unsure whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced skier, ask a ski instructor or other experienced skier to watch you and give his opinion. As a general rule, intermediate skiers can handle blue runs and the easier black runs. Advanced skiers can consistently handle the more difficult black runs.

Take off your shoes and measure your height in centimeters. If you need to convert from inches, multiply your height by 2.54.

    • 3

Subtract 15 centimeters from your height if you are a beginner. For intermediate skiers, subtract 10 centimeters from the measured height. Subtract five to 10 centimeters if you are an advanced skier.

    • 4

Visit a local sporting goods store or ski resort pro shop to try on skis that are your desired length. Make sure you are comfortable with your ability to maneuver the skis before you use them on a hill.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take your weight into consideration when sizing downhill skis. If you are heavier than average, you can use longer skis than a lighter person of the same height. Likewise, people who are tall and thin may find shorter skis easier to maneuver.
