How to Troubleshoot a Craftsman Snowblower Muffler

Fix your Craftsman snowblower muffler.

When you are using your Craftsman snow blower and the engine seems to be unusually loud or you feel like there isn't the usual power output by the engine, there is an excellent chance that you have an issue with the muffler on the engine. The muffler not only makes the engine quieter, but it also provides back pressure for the engine so it can run at its full horsepower potential.

Things You'll Need

• Wrench set
• Muffler gasket
• Rag

Instructions

1. Wait several hours for the engine to cool before working with the muffler because you will get burned if you touch it after you shut off the engine.

2. Locate the muffler bolted to the exhaust port on the side of the engine block on your Craftsman snow blower engine.

3. Fit the proper size wrench on the two bolts holding the muffler to the engine block. Unscrew the bolts, and remove the muffler.

4. Look at all the sides of the muffler to inspect the muffler for cracks. In the winter especially, water can freeze in compartments of the muffler and crack the muffler, making it useless. Buy a new replacement muffler if this is the case; they usually cost under $10 in 2010.

5. Peel the old gasket off the exhaust port. Wipe away any debris with a rag. Put the new gasket in place, and tighten the muffler back onto the engine.
