Improve your physical fitness. The duties of a police officer require a high level of physical activity. For instance, you might have to chase a suspect on foot, navigate obstacles or wrestle a suspect to the ground. Train for aerobic fitness, muscular strength and anaerobic endurance. This can be best accomplished through heavy weight training and interval training. Learn what it feels like to be fatigued.

Learn self-defense skills. A police officer must be able to defend himself and others. Find a class in your area that teaches self-defense. Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are among the best martial arts for self-defense.

Learn to shoot a weapon. It is important to be able to defend yourself not only in hand-to-hand combat, but also with a weapon. Find a local shooting range, and begin learning the basics of shooting.

Attend a police academy. Most large police departments have their own academies, and there are several other private options. The academy is where you put all of your training together. In the academy, future police officers learn the laws they are expected to enforce as well as self-defense, control and firearm techniques.

Earning a college degree in criminal justice can be beneficial because many police departments require a college education. A degree will also prepare you more thoroughly for the duties of a police officer.
