Instructions to Crochet a Cotton Can Cozy

An icy can of soda may be exactly the thirst quencher you want on a hot day, but trickling condensation can make a mess of your teak patio table. Protect your table, keep your soda chilled and your fingers warm and dry with a simple-to-make crocheted cotton can cozy. If you know how to work a single crochet, you can make up a crocheted can cozy in a couple of hours, or a set of cozies in an evening.

    • 1

Make a ring with the main color of cotton yarn. Hold the ends of the loop with your thumb and forefinger. Insert the crochet hook into the center of the ring, catch the yarn from the ball and pull it through the ring. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the loop on your hook. Make seven more single crochet into the ring. Hold the stitches firmly between your thumb and forefinger and pull the end of the yarn to tighten the ring. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join the stitches into a ring.

    • 2

Chain one--you will begin each round with a chain one. Make two single crochets in each single crochet around. Slip stitch into the first single crochet to join the stitches into a round.

    • 3

Make one single crochet in the next single crochet. Make two single crochet in the next single crochet. Repeat the last two stitches around the entire round. Join all rounds from this point on with a slip stitch.

    • 4

Work one single crochet in each of next two single crochet. Work two single crochet in the next single crochet. Repeat the last four stitches to the end of the round.

    • 5

Make one single crochet in each single crochet to the end of the round, working in the back loop only of each stitch.

    • 6

Work one single crochet in each single crochet. Repeat for four rows in main color.

    • 7

Change colors by breaking the yarn without pulling it through the loop on the hook. Pick up a loop of the contrasting color. Continue to work in even rows as in the last step, working four rows in contrasting color followed by four rows in the main color.

    • 8

Work one row of single crochet in contrasting color. Break yarn and pull the end through the loop to end. Weave the ends into the stitches.
