Windows Live Messenger can be used for online chatting.

Windows Live Messenger--formerly known as MSN Messenger--is a program used for instant messaging, or typed chatting online. Download Windows Live Messenger from the Microsoft website and sign up with a Windows Live ID to begin chatting online with your friends and family.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install Windows Live Messenger (see Resources). The program launches automatically after it is installed. When a window appears asking if you have a Windows Live ID, click the blue "Sign Up" link at the bottom. This opens a new window in your browser.

    • 2

Type the name or nickname you would like to use as your Windows Live ID, then use the drop-down menu to select whether the ID should end in "@live.com" or "@hotmail.com." Click the "Check Availability" button. You might find that your first few ideas are already taken; keep trying.

    • 3

Type the password you would like to use, then re-type it to confirm you entered it correctly.

    • 4

Type your first and last name.

    • 5

Type an email address to which Windows Live can send password reset information in the event that you forget your password.

    • 6

Type your country, state and postal code.

    • 7

Enter your gender and birth year.

    • 8

Type the alphanumerical code you see at the bottom of the window. This confirms that the information is being entered by a person rather than an automatic script.

    • 9

Look over the information to confirm that it is all entered correctly, then click the "I Accept" button. After you go to a new page titled "Get Started with Windows Live," minimize the browser window and return to the Windows Live Messenger window, which should still be asking if you have a Windows Live ID. Click "Close." The Windows Live Messenger sign-in window appears.

    • 10

Enter your newly created Windows Live ID. Do not forget to include the "@live.com" or "@hotmail.com" at the end. Enter your password, then click "Sign In." You are now signed in to Windows Live Messenger.
