How to Make Pirate Swords Out of Paper
A pirate sword is a necessary accessory for every pirate costume; it's just as essential as a pirate's hat or a stuffed parrot, as these items help complete the ensemble. Making a pirate sword out of paper is a perfect solution for a kid's pirate costume. With paper, you don't have to worry about a child hurting another child or himself when playing with this toy. Another benefit is that it's easy and quick to make, not to mention cheap. You can probably find all the materials that you need for this craft around your house.

Neatly stack two sheets of newspaper on top of each other so that their sides and corners line up evenly. Turn the newspaper sheets so that they are horizontal.

Pick up the edge of the bottom left corner and roll the edge inwards. Keep rolling the two sheets on a diagonal until you have a rolled-up rod of newspaper.

Wrap a 6- to 8-inch piece of tape around the top and bottom of the sword to prevent it from unraveling. Choose an end of the rod to be the top and the other end to be the bottom.

Hold the bottom of the rod upwards so that it points north. Fold and sculpt 7 inches of the bottom end of the rod into a capital "D" shape. Tape it into place. This is your sword's knuckle bow.

Draw a circle on a piece of cardboard that has a 6-inch diameter. Draw a smaller circle in the exact middle of this larger circle that has a 1-inch diameter. Cut them both out with scissors. It should look like you have a thick doughnut. This is your quillons.

Paint the top and bottom of your quillons black. Allow it to dry and slide it onto the top of your sword and down to the bottom until it touches your knuckle bow.

Cut a strip of cardboard 3 inches long and 1 inch wide. Wrap it around the rod immediately on top of your quillons. Wrap an 8- to 10-inch strip of tape around it. This will help your quillons stay in place and prevent it from moving around or sliding up and down the blade.
