How to Apply for Social Security Insurance
Social Security was created in 1935 at part of the New Deal. It has become the basic safety net for senior retirement. To apply for retirement benefits a senior must be at least 61 years and 8 months old. An application may be made in person at a local Social Security office, or done over the Internet. The estimated time for completing the computer application from start to finish is about 15 minutes.

- Personal information such as Social Security Number and birthdate

Open your web browser and go to the "The Official Website of the U.S. Social Security Administration" page--http://www.ssa.gov/.

Click the "Retirement/Medicare" button just below the yellow "Select Below to Apply For" box. (If you're looking to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance, click the button just below marked "Disability Benefits.)

Start the application process by completing the form on the right hand side of the page and then click on "Apply for Benefits."

Complete the "Applicant Identification" form and click on "Next."

Complete the form by filling in the appropriate information.
