How to Set Up a Static IP Address With Your Router

The router needs to be configured for use with Static IP.

A static IP address is provided by an Internet Service Provider (ISP). A static IP is useful when using components that work better with set configurations. For instance, web servers, email servers and virtual private networks all benefit from using static IP's. A router must be configured with a static IP address because many routers are set to dynamic IP as a default setting.

Things You'll Need

• Router
• Ethernet cable
• Computer

Instructions

1. Connect the ethernet cable from the computer to one of the four LAN ports on the router.

2. Open a web browser and type in the address for the router's utility. The address will look similar to "192.168.X.X." Refer to the router's user manual for the specific address. If you are asked for login information the default username on many routers is "admin" and "password." Refer to the user manual for specific login information.

3. Click on "Basic", "Basic Settings" or some variation. Select the option for static IP, then enter the static IP address, subnet mask and default gateway provided by the ISP.

4. Save the settings and exit the router utility.
