Learn how to crochet a beanie hat and then experiment with new stitch patterns later.

Crocheted hats come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Once you master crocheting a beanie hat you can use that same basic pattern to create new hats. Change the beanie hat pattern by alternating yarn colors for stripes, adding pompoms or other toppers. You can make a beanie hat for anyone on your gift list if you follow a basic formula for crocheting a hat.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain four and join with a slip stitch to form a ring. Chain one and make six single crochet stitches in the center of the ring you have made. Join with a slip stitch.

    • 2

Chain one and make two single crochet stitches in every stitch around to increase the size of your circle. Join with a slip stitch.

    • 3

Increase by chaining one and making two single crochets in the first stitch followed by one single crochet in the next stitch; repeat to end of row and join with a slip stitch. For round four, chain one and make two single crochets in the first stitch, then one in each of the next two stitches. Repeat to the end of the row and join.

Chain one and make two single crochet stitches in the first stitch followed by one in each of the next three stitches for the fifth round; join with a slip stitch. Continue adding one more individual single crochet stitch after the doubled stitch in your pattern. Stop increasing when the circumference of the hat is 1 to 2 inches smaller than the circumference of the recipient's head.

    • 4

Single crochet in every stitch around until the hat reaches its desired height.

    • 5

Fasten off, cut the working yarn and make one more slip stitch to secure it; then weave in your loose ends with a large-eye blunt needle.
