How to Use an Orbital Buffer Cleaning Spur

An orbital buffer is similar to an orbital sander, except that it has a buffing pad attached to it instead of sandpaper. The circular pad rotates rapidly on the surface of a vehicle to apply and buff wax. Some buffer pads, especially wool, become clogged with excess wax. If the wax is not removed, it can scratch the vehicle finish, or fail to polish the vehicle surface properly. A device called a cleaning spur is used to clean the orbital buffer.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the buffing pad from the buffing machine, following the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Lay the pad with the buffing side up in a well-ventilated area to dry overnight. The wax is much easier to remove from the pad once it dries.

    • 3

Place the buffer pad back onto the buffing machine, reversing the steps you took to remove it.

    • 4

Plug the buffing machine into an electrical outlet.

    • 5

Hold the handle of the orbital buffer in one hand and rest the back of the machine against your knee while you stand. The edge of the buffing pad should point toward the floor.

    • 6

Turn the buffing machine on and pick up the cleaning spur in your other hand.

    • 7

Press the cleaning spur gently onto the buffer and move it back and forth in a straight line at the top of the pad, as the pad rotates. After three to four seconds, move the cleaning spur down slightly and move it in another straight line. Continue this process until you reach the center of the pad.

    • 8

Turn the buffing machine off and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Wipe away any wax dust from the machine, using a clean cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cleaning spurs are available at any automobile supply store.

  • It's a good idea to clean buffers outside, as wax debris and dust will fall off.

  • Wear safety glasses while using the cleaning spur.
