How to Run a Basketball Defense: Zone 1-2-2

This is a common zone defense, one that best protects the areas between zones.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Athletic Socks
  • Basketball Uniforms
  • Basketball Hoops
  • Basketball Shoes
  • Basketballs
  • Basketballs
  1. Step 1

    Set the point guard at point.

  2. Step 2

    Position the off guard at one high post.

  3. Step 3

    Set the first forward at the other high post.

  4. Step 4

    Put the center in low post.

  5. Step 5

    Position the second forward at the opposite low post.

  6. Step 6

    Engage any ball handler entering the zone.

  7. Step 7

    Stay between the ball and the basket.

  8. Step 8

    Shift the defenders slightly to the left or right, following the movement of the ball on the court.

Tips & Warnings
  • Protect the seams between zones. This is where the ball tends to slip through.
  • A zone defense, although effective, is often boring. It forces the offense to take outside shots, which for young teams can be difficult.

on 11/22/2005 In our zone D---we will defend the three by going at the shooter with hands up (never fouling the three point shooter---that is the 11th commandment, I read it in the Bible, or at least that's what I tell the boys). Then we will release the defender to fly. It is amazing how many wide open lay-ups you can get with the long pass to a fly man. If it isn't there, we will simply run our secondary break. Most 3's will bounce long and our guards will rebound many times for a pass and a snow bird..
