How to Set up Wireless Security With Linksys

How to Set up Wireless Security With Linksys thumbnail
Linksys routers provide security options.

Linksys wireless security encrypts the data sent from your computer to this brand of router. It protects you from eavesdroppers, which is the term given to people who steal data from wireless connections. A Linksys wireless router has a console that provides settings options for the device. One of those options is setting a security keyphrase for your wireless connection. This is accomplished in the "Wireless" tab in your Linksys console.

Instructions

    • 1

Open a browser and enter the Linksys router's IP address in the navigation text box. The default IP address programmed on a Linksys router is "192.168.1.1."

    • 2

Enter your user name and password for the Linksys router console. The default user name is blank, and the default password is "admin." The main Linksys console opens, and it lists your current settings.

    • 3

Click the "Wireless" tab at the top of the screen. If you have no wireless security set, the page shows no password or encryption scheme.

    • 4

Select "WPA2" from the security drop-down box. In the text box labeled "WPA Shared Passkey," enter the password for your network. This is the password shared with others who connect to your wireless network.

    • 5

Click the "Save" button. This saves your settings. To connect to the wireless network, you need to reboot your machine. The next time you try to connect to the network, you will be prompted for the new passkey you entered into the Linksys console.
