How to Access Secure Email Attachments

Use a password to read secure email attachments.

Secure email attachments may be Word files, Excel files or Adobe files that have a password encrypted into them. They may also be files that are zipped and require a password for the folder. To access secure email attachments, you need a password or a key. The advantage of such attachments is that the information in the document can be kept private, as long as the password is only shared with those who need to open the attachment.

Instructions

1. Open the email that has an encrypted file or password-protected attachment.

2. Click on the attachment.

3. Input the password into the box when prompted to view the document. If the password is correct, the document will open.

Tips & Warnings

• Have the person sending you a secure email attachment contact you with the password they will use. It might be something you set up in person, over the phone or online, as long as you send it privately online.

• If you do not know the password, the secure email attachment is probably not meant for you to see.

• Do not attempt to view a secure email attachment that is not intended for you, as this may be considered theft, fraud or identity theft.
