How to Get Rid of My Firewall on LimeWire

How to Get Rid of My Firewall on LimeWire thumbnail
Firewalls protect your computer from hackers, but can also be a nuisance.

LimeWire is free file-sharing software with versions that run on Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems. LimeWire uses the Gnutella network to connect users all over the world and let them share files. To download files, any firewalls need to allow LimeWire to connect to Gnutella, and a common problem is having a firewall that prevents that connection.

Instructions

  1. Adding a LimeWire Exception in Windows Firewall

    • 1

Launch LimeWire. You can choose it from the Program list under the Start menu, or you can double click on a shortcut icon on the desktop.

    • 2

Open Windows Firewall. Double-click to open your control panel from the Start menu and double-click on the Windows Firewall icon.

    • 3

Make sure the firewall is turned on. The on option should be ticked on the General tab.

    • 4

Choose the Exceptions tab and mark the check box next to LimeWire. Click the "OK" button.

Adding an Exception for LimeWire on a Mac

    • 5

Click the HD icon and select System Preferences from the Applications menu.

    • 6

Open your firewall's options. Depending on which version of Mac you use, you can find this under the menus for Internet & Network > Sharing for OS X or the icon for Security under the Personal menu for Leopard.

    • 7

Set the access through the firewall by clicking "New" or "+" and clicking on LimeWire. Click "Add" or "OK," and make sure the check box labeled "Allow Incoming Connections" is marked.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some versions of Windows have their own firewall, and some also have a firewall as part of a third-party security software package. Make sure the security software also has LimeWire listed as an exception.

  • Most wireless routers have a built-in firewall. Follow the router documentation to access the configuration window for your router and add LimeWire to the exceptions.
