How to Seal Travertine Tiles on Countertops

Travertine tiles have a rustic beauty and elegance that enhances any installation. When using them on a countertop, it's particularly important to seal them on a regular basis. Like all natural stones, travertine is porous and can be stained or etched by contact with certain substances. Tomato sauce, toothpaste, grape juice or hair gel can stain travertine tiles. To protect them, cover them in a silicone-based, impregnating sealer on a regular basis.

Things You'll Need

• Stone cleaner
• Lint-free cloths
• Impregnating sealer
• Foam paintbrush

Instructions

1. Clean the travertine with a stone cleaner to remove any surface debris that could interfere with the sealant. Stone cleaners are available in spray bottles; spray the cleaner on the stone and wipe it with a lint-free cloth.

2. Paint the travertine tiles with a silicone-based, impregnating sealer using a foam paintbrush. Work from the back of the counter forward to ensure even coverage of the tiles. The sealer can also protect grout joints, so be sure to cover those as well. Allow the sealer to penetrate the stone for up to an hour.

3. Wipe up excess sealant that has not been absorbed with a lint-free cloth. Buff the surface of the tiles with the cloth to ensure that no excess sealer is left behind to dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Well-sealed stone should bead water on the surface. When this ceases to happen, it's time to reseal your stones.
